Passion for Environmental Science

I've been curious about nature and our environment since I was a kid. It started during my childhood when I was hooked on to a cartoon show called Octonauts which explored oceans and life under water. For years during elementary and middle school, I spent every summer at the Marine Science Institute in Redwood City, participating in their marine biology programs. As soon as I became eligible, I got my scuba diving license, eager to experience life under the sea firsthand. Gradually, my fascination with the ocean evolved into a passion for environmental science.

I have since made every effort to learn more about this subject. This included self studying AP Environmental Science as a 9th grader, interning at a carbon accounting firm, pursuing competitive research programs in the summers after sophomore and junior years, conducting extensive research on mangroves as blue carbon solutions, helping mangrove regeneration efforts in the Sundarbans through sustainable carbon credit based financing. Additionally, to tackle the issue of ocean pollution in Singapore, working as a youth ambassador of the Singapore Oceanarium.

I am grateful for these opportunities as they have really helped me build a solid base in the subject, made me fall in love with it even more, and prepared me well to pursue environmental science in my undergraduate studies.
